An eco-designed range for the well-being of everyone and the planet

Complete openness

If you are reading this page, it’s because you have acquired an item from our new Jardins d'Intérieur (‘Indoor Gardens’) range: a collection that has been revised and improved in order to meet our – and your – shared desire for naturalness, responsibility and openness. It is the fruit of our responsible creation approach, a set of values that has been guiding the day-to-day lives of our 80 employees for a great many years.

With this new generation range, we have accepted the challenge of offering you perfumed and perfuming products that meet the twin objectives of satisfying your desires for decorative and fragrant items while simultaneously addressing your concerns as eco-aware citizens. And, considering that all of us at Estéban are proud to do what we say and say what we do, we have taken the additional step of providing you with a point-by-point explanation of what this means exactly for our products and their manufacturing process.

For each of these products, we have chosen solutions that seemed most fully aligned with our specifications, your expectations and environmental challenges. Here is a brief guided tour of the fine progress we have achieved...

At Estéban, we take particular care in the choice of ingredients and raw materials used in the fashioning of our products. This diligence includes the choice of:

    • Containers made of "noble" materials such as wood, ceramic or glass, for even greater authenticity
    • Perfume bases, which are systematically bio-sourced (vegetable wax and alcohol, perfume tree branches made of wood, rattan stems, ceramics, and mulberry paper in particular)
    • The composition of our formulae inspired by nature and always developed with an paramount concern for health and environmental protection

The fragrances in the Nature range ALL contain natural extracts. We select Fair Trade ingredients whenever possible, as in the case of the Ylang-ylang in our Monoï Soleil perfume. To ensure that our fragrances are perfectly harmless, the notes are long-lasting and balanced, certain olfactory features are recomposed synthetically, always in the greatest respect for health and environmental protection.

Forerunners in vegetable wax candle refills, we have extended this smart approach to virtually all our products to the effect that all the following can now be refilled: candles, scented bouquets, car fragrance diffusers, scented trees and flowers (both containers and contents).

The fact of making refills available – a response that makes both ecological and economic sense – helps to make our consumption habits more environmentally responsible by extending product life cycles and limiting the manufacture of new products and packaging. Think about it!

Just like all our other fragrances, the perfumes in the Jardin d'Intérieur range are exclusive creations derived from patented formulae, developed over many months in accordance with a set of particularly strict specifications both in terms of composition and safety.

Tested and calibrated in our application laboratory in the south of France, our perfumed products are then manufactured on site by our different teams, each responsible in their particular area for the development and quality of production.

More than 99% of our perfumed products are crafted in our workshops in the South of France. The remaining 1% is comprised of our Japanese incense, made in Japan according to the canons of ancestral know-how.

At Estéban, we make it a point of honour to promote the eco-design of our creations by favouring recyclable materials, reducing non-legitimate over-packaging, and working to extend the useful lives of our products.

We take this recyclability requirement even further considering that all our refill bottles are now made of 100% recycled plastic (and capable of being recycled again and again), an approach that encourages and supports the recycling sector and contributes to reducing the quantity of virgin plastic in circulation.

The cardboard in our cases is made from materials derived from sustainably managed forests and other controlled sources. All our packaging materials and bottles are recyclable, so please follow the sorting instructions to ensure that the life cycle of the materials can continue.

In this new Jardin d'Intérieur range, the wooden covers of the candle refills as well as the wooden decorative stems of our bouquets can be reused (once hung, the wooden cover of the candle refills can be used as a fragrant object in a wardrobe, for example). Don’t forget to give them a second (or third!) lease on life!

Since the end of 2020, 1% of the turnover generated by the Jardins d'Intérieur limited editions has already been donated to environmental associations through the 1% for the Planet® collective.

With this new Jardins d'Intérieur range, we have decided to go even further and extend this commitment to all the different fragrances in the univers Nature collection, whether they are limited editions or permanent references. For an SME like ours, this represents a major commitment on our part but one that clearly made sense to us, both in our capacity as an economic player (and the responsibility of supporting good business practices implied by this status) and as citizens concerned by climate issues (and we are sure that this counts for you, too!). When it comes to protecting the environment, every little gesture counts!

Eco-designed candle

#1 Even more eco-responsible vegetable wax

The specifications for this new wax were particularly demanding: a candle paste still 100% of vegetable origin, with bio-sourced oils selected for the quality of their supply… and all this with an even more optimized burning time. It was an awesome challenge!

And a challenge met successfully with this 100% vegetable wax made from principally European GMO-free rapeseed, without any palm oil or soya oil (and their derivatives). For the creaminess of the formula, we added ingredients derived from coconuts… to the effect that nothing was left to chance! This new recipe is the fruit of 2 years’ work, more than 370 formula tests and 400 olfactory studio tests. We had imagined it for you; the result is here, and the finished product is clearly equal to our expectations... We'll let you judge for yourself!

#2 Candle "made in not far away"

The wax used in our candles, manufactured and perfumed in our workshops in the south of France, is poured in situ by our experts into glasses produced by our European neighbours using OCS 100% certified cotton wicks, inserted by hand.

This new wick has been subject to an extensive battery of tests before being placed into the very heart of our candles, given that its quality is crucial for a harmonious burn. In all, no fewer than 7 individual talents were involved in bringing you this new generation candle, and we are extremely proud of them all!

#3 Candle refills

To further optimize this ecological act – a gesture that benefits both our planet and our wallets – our candle refills are now available for all our collections. Easy to use, the candle refills easily become an integral part of our daily routine (and we love them for that!). Although Estéban has been offering this canny product for a great many years, we wanted to rethink the securing lid (until now, made of plastic) in order to make it even more coherent with its eco-design objectives. This has now been done with the adoption of this wooden cover from sustainably managed forests, designed and cut within our own workshops.

Speaking of design, did you know that the cut-outs in the new cap are the fruit of carefully thought-out design? Each serves a very specific purpose:

  • The larger one enables you to discover the chosen fragrance without unpacking the product
  • The second one enables you to use a ribbon to hang the perfume-impregnated cap in your wardrobe or elsewhere, once the refill has been used. As Lavoisier would say: “Nothing is lost [...], everything is transformed.”

And if you don't (yet) know how to use it, don't worry: all the instructions for use are clearly provided on the cardboard pot (to be sorted into the relevant bin once the refill has been used, of course).

#4 Clever packaging

In addition to protecting your candle until it reaches you, this new case tells the story of the product and provides informative details about its composition. In our jargon, this information trail, which is very clearly displayed on the side of the case, is called the "know-how path".

The shape of the case has been specifically designed to allow you to choose your candle without unwrapping it (with a "smile opening" on the top to enjoy the fragrance and a window on the front to admire the candle’s design).

The cardboard used for the packaging is comprised of materials derived from sustainably managed forests and other controlled sources. The box is entirely recyclable and self-sufficient (calibrated to perfectly encase the candle, it does not require any superfluous wedges).

The exclusive info for fans of decorating:

At Estéban, we love working with wood so much that we decided to create a unique product for you, in line with our candle expertise: a small accessory that we imagined ourselves (and whose design is a tribute to our passion for Japan) to endow your candle with even greater decorative panache, to give it a touch of wood (very warm in an interior) or simply to set it off in style, as on a promontory. To be continued!

scented bouquets

#1 A well thought-out bouquet

It is no coincidence that your product is comprised of 2 types of stems; each has its own specific purpose:

  • The single stems are made of rattan, a natural raw material that is particularly well-suited to reproducing the subtleties of the fragrance, progressively and autonomously releasing the perfume trail into the air for a bouquet that diffuses independently for approximately 3 weeks.
  • The decorative stems (with their cut-out features) are not porous but decorative in nature, to the effect that you can keep them forever. Their shape is designed not only to give your bouquet an attractive silhouette but also to minimize waste during cutting. The wood we use, which is derived from sustainably managed forests, is a precious material, and we make a point of saving it!

If, at present, the vase used for our bouquets is not manufactured in Europe it is because it is based on a highly specific design. We needed to create a dedicated mould; and our current quantities have not enabled us (so far) to find partners in France or in neighbouring countries to produce it. Let's hope that with your help, we will soon be able to offer you vases produced closer to home!

The perfume refill that accompanies your bouquet has also been redesigned: from 75ml to 100ml, it extends the total life of your product, for an optimized use.

#2 A flower inspired by nature

At first sight, this little flower is nothing special and yet it is 100% handmade! The manufacture and assembly of its petals, made from paper mulberry fibres, is carried out in Thailand, where a local community has been passing down this ancestral know-how for generations.

The 100% cotton wick ensures that the fragrance rises up into the flower, which diffuses your favourite fragrance by capillary action for a period of 2 to 3 weeks. Available in 7 different fragrances, this flower can be refilled an infinite number of times (flower and fragrances) and its glass bottle is recyclable. It will create a fragrant, poetic atmosphere in all parts of the house, even the smallest (the fully assembled flower is 15cm in height) – without compromising on authenticity!

#3 A new-look refill

It may not be visible to the naked eye but our refill bottles have also been made more eco-friendly!

  • We have moved from using a recyclable bottle to choosing a bottle made of 100% recycled plastic capable of being recycled again and again. It may seem a minor detail but managing to obtain such a transparent, robust and waterproof surface using recycled plastic represents a tremendous feat. This was achieved by working closely with our French supplier, allowing us to contribute, in our own way, to reducing the amount of virgin plastic in circulation. A small detail yet an extremely positive impact!
  • 82% of the total ingredients are organically grown, and the entire formula is vegan.
  • The capacity of our refills has also been increased to enhance the life of your product and, at the same time, to optimize usage.
  • The label is even more informative and gives precise details about the composition and manufacture of your perfume, for even greater transparency.

Other fragrance delivery systems

#1 A sprayer that lives up to its name

Of all our fragrance delivery systems, the perfume spray is the one that allows the fastest diffusion of the fragrance with a particularly subtle and faithful restitution of the scent. With its glass bottle (recyclable, of course) sourced from European suppliers, and its metal cap supplied, this time, by our English neighbours, the spray proudly carries high the colours of the perfumer's know-how.

With its attractive colours, due to both the labels and the gradation of the perfumed solutions, you will want to collect them all!

The fragrance included in the spray is a composition of which we are particularly proud:

  • A total percentage of organically produced ingredients of 82%
  • Organic plant alcohol sourced in Europe
  • No ingredients of animal origin

All of this has been designed, composed and tested in France, in our application laboratory, in accordance with specifications even more stringent than the regulations currently in force. We weren’t joking when we said that we took the subject seriously!

#2 A concentrate with a nose

Did you know that the perfume concentrate is the highest fragrance concentration in the range? To hold this precious elixir, we have chosen:

  • A thick glass bottle, delivered by our French supplier
  • A Bakelite cap including a plastic dropper, to ensure the watertightness and precision of the bottle
  • A packaging case made from materials derived from sustainably managed forests and other controlled sources
  • A case and a bottle that can both be recycled

Questions & answers on our choices

Why did we choose rapeseed for our wax?

The bio-sourced oils used in our candles have been selected for the quality of their supply, as well as how they perform when being diffused.

Rapeseed oil has organoleptic properties comparable to palm oil, with the significant advantage of being grown in Europe.

This characteristic allows us to be even more demanding and to impose, for our wax, a mostly European GMO-free rapeseed allowing us to combine a pleasant olfactory result with safety for consumers’ health and respect for the environment. The result is 100% vegetable candle paste free of palm oil or soya oil (and their derivatives) of which we are particularly proud!

What does it mean to be vegan for a home fragrance?

Rest assured, it is obviously not a question of testing room fragrances on animals; this makes no sense in our profession and, above all, is prohibited by European cosmetic regulations.

On the other hand, as a perfume creator, whether raw materials of animal origin are used in perfume compositions is a valid question.

For our part, we have chosen to reformulate some of our formulae in order to eliminate all traces of animal-derived fragrance materials (traditionally, perfumery has used raw materials of both plant and animal origin).

Ambrettolide is one example, frequently used to create amber notes and made from an animal substance. We have reformulated all the fragrances that contained it in order to replace this ingredient. This change involved a great deal of reformulation work to respect the original olfactory signature while changing the composition.

This is where the perfumer's experience and expertise comes into play. This "vegan" guarantee is a brand commitment that we apply to all our new fragrances, and all our existing fragrances will also be reformulated along the same lines. We still have a long way to go but we know we’ll get there!

What is not "natural" in our fragrances?

The bases of our perfumes, whether wax or alcoholic solution, are all bio-sourced, i.e. of natural origin (and, moreover, derived from plants). The composition of our perfumes, like most perfumes in the industry, integrates natural raw materials (essential oils, absolutes, isolates, etc.) and synthetic molecules, i.e. notes re-created in the laboratory by the perfumer.

Some natural raw materials are not renewable, so the use of synthesis allows us to protect these resources. On the other hand, synthesis makes it possible to obtain notes that do not exist in nature (e.g. musky or leathery notes) and therefore allows the perfumer greater creativity.

Whether natural or synthetic, the raw materials we use are selected in accordance with highly selective formulation specifications in order to respect our customers’ health and protect the environment. This extreme vigilance applies to our finished products as well as our manufacturing processes, so that no employee is ever brought into contact with a hazardous substance.

What is "organic" in our fragrances?

In our Jardins d'Intérieur perfumes, the alcohol we use as the main active ingredient in the diffusion and preservation of our bouquet solutions and sprays is certified 100% organic.

The choice of this plant alcohol from European agriculture allows us to guarantee that a total of 82% of the ingredients of all the perfumes in the Jardin d'Intérieur range are derived from organic agriculture. This option also helps to support the organic farming sector.

Why only recycled plastic refill bottles now? And why not glass?

The progress made in the industry means that recycled plastic can now have properties equivalent to those enjoyed by virgin plastic. The advantage of plastic over glass is that it is lighter and less fragile (greater degree of flexibility and higher shock absorption capacity). This is why the choice of recycled plastic seemed to us to be the perfect compromise.

Moreover, the more uses we create for recycled plastic products, the more we encourage professionals in the sector to recycle. To encourage recycling, we must first and foremost provide greater demand for recycled plastic!

Why virgin glass bottles, not recycled ones?

Recycled glass currently offers fewer possibilities (in terms of colour and choice of decorative features) than virgin glass. However, new glass is still 100% recyclable, indefinitely.

Why virgin cardboard boxes, not recycled ones?

At the time of writing, the fact of using the recycled cardboard available to our suppliers would mean reinforcing the packaging with extra thickness or additional wedges to ensure the safety of our products (owing to the insufficient strength of this recycled material compared to our usual standards).

In contrast, virgin cardboard, whose fibres remain highly elastic, provides a degree of strength and solidity that minimizes the risk of damage during transport and, therefore, the need to remanufacture new products.

In view of these considerations, we have chosen to prioritize reducing the amount of material used in our packaging. To give you an idea: on our Classic range, the removal of the wedges has already enabled us to save 300kg of cardboard in 1 year.

Let's also bear in mind that, even with virgin cardboard, all our packaging is 100% recyclable: remember to follow the sorting instructions to give them a new lease on life.

Why aren't all the components of our products sourced in France/Europe?

Whenever possible, we source from French or European suppliers. However, for certain components, local sourcing is not yet possible, owing to:

  • A lack of equivalents produced in Europe
  • Insufficient quantities to allow production without price discrimination for the consumer
  • Or simply a historical partnership with suppliers with whom we have worked for a long time

However, we are committed to systematically prioritizing local sourcing and will continue to question our manufacturers in this regard.

Why this partnership with 1% for the Planet®?

The reason for this partnership is threefold:

  • Above and beyond our manufacturing choices (we favour the eco-design of our products in order to offer you at all times the most environmentally friendly creations possible), we wanted to go even further in our commitments by providing concrete support to the associations working for the good of the planet. For an SME such as ours, this commitment represents a strong, long-term commitment because it applies to an entire range of products (one of our 3 product areas).
  • This international collective does great work on the ground: corporate philanthropists, associations and committed individuals work together to effectively accelerate donations for the environment. This represents a wealth of valuable expertise to ensure that contributions go to the right place and are as effective as possible
  • It is a contribution of which we are all proud at Estéban and that wins the support of all our employees around the world.

All these questions were studied closely with the Eco-Design Division, which we thank for their foresight, their support and their expertise in the field. We would like to give special thanks to Marie Cussol, Eco-Design Consultant and Leader of the Eco-Design programme in Occitania.
